On October 6th, 2022, the AFL-CIO Investment Trust Corporation (ITC) participated in a groundbreaking at the Kaulana Mahina Apartments in Wailuku Maui, the first new workforce housing project on Maui in decades and the AFL-CIO Building Investment Trust’s (BIT) first project in Hawai’i. As with all BIT construction, it will be built AND maintained with 100% union workers.
“Kaulana Mahina is a welcome addition to Maui’s range of housing options for our hardworking residents. Built by, and for, the people of Hawai’i, today’s event marks another important step toward improving the quality of life for our local people”, said Maui County Mayor, Michael Victorino.
The project was highlighted in local media as an example of the importance of providing workforce housing in the state. Achieving this objective while building and maintaining a project built with union labor is an example of the labor movement’s values at work, noted ITC’s Paul Gurewitz during the ceremony.
